The purpose of this study is to examine the basic learning competencies of the junior college students and to come up with the ways to improve the lack of learning competencies. Major research methodologies include literature review, data analysis, interview with teachers, focus group meeting with experts, tests for language, math and English, and survey by both students and teachers.
The basic competencies are limited to language, mathematics and English. The test results show that 44% of students do not reach the minimum requirements for learning specialty courses in areas of language (Korean), 51% of students are below the minimum criterion in English, and 57% of students do not satisfy the minimum learning criterion in mathematics do not reach the minimum criteria. In terms of academic areas, students from nursing field had the highest scores, followed by those from industrial and social field, and those from arts field had the lowest scores. By gender, female students had higher scores than male students. In terms of locality, junior college students located in cities had higher scores than those from located at rural areas.
