Today's world of work is much different than yesterday's. Change and uncertainty is the norm. It is most likely that the role of career guidance both in the school and home has been strengthened as the essential role for Human Resource Development. Although a relatively large body of career guidance program has developed, it has tended to be descriptive, outlining the importance of career guidance rather than suggesting the way of career guidance, which can practically usable at home with their children. That is why many parents are facing difficulties on guiding their children's career direction.
The present study was designed to develop career guidance programs for parent utilization both at home and school for a two-year-long project.
The major purposes of 1st study were to develop the pre-program based on career development theories and implications, and the identified survey results from both parents and teachers on the matter of career guidance at home and school
Eight modules were developed for the pre-program; ① children understanding ② world of work ③ work ethics ④ education and training ⑤ certifications and licences ⑥ human relations ⑦ career plan ⑧ the new college entrance policy beginning year of 2002. Three types of materials are included on pre-programs; ① eight modules of program ②instructor's guide ③ appendix consisting of actual knowledge and information on career guidance.
In the second year, 2000, the study were to investigate the validity of pre-program by managing pilot-test at the school sector through working of 18 schools with parents and teachers, and revise the pre-program. In addition, VTR was developed as an additional material of program, which intend to increase parents motivation.
Even though most parents and teachers are satisfied all over the moduels according to the pilot-test results, somehow more practical and applicapable career guidance actions were asked to be included on the program. Therefore, more implemental information and knowledge on career guidance for their children were added on appendix. The program delivery method was revised such two-way parents discussion from one-way teaching oriented manner. Further, real action guideline involving both parents and children were added.
The major directions of VTR development were to make parents recognize the essential role of career guidance at home, and let them learn the tips for career guidance in a short-time. The four part were consisted of VTR;① Understanding my children's characteristics ② The major trends of changing world of work ③ The importance of career planning and strategy, and ④ The effective communication skills with their children. Four times of informal evaluation through VTR preview were held with various resource personnel such as research and VTR development teams and school teachers who charged on pilot school test.
Finally, the effective way of dissemination for the career guidance program for parent education, school-parents collaboration, building partnerships, and school and goverment involvement are suggested.
