○ At 1 April 2021, the total number of specialized high schools for vocation was 464. This is the same number as April 2011. However, a decline in school-age population drove up the number of small specialized high schools from 27 in 2011 to 80 in 2021.
○ The number of students at specialized high schools declined from 337,499 in 2011 to 196,067 in 2021, representing a 4.19% drop over the last decade. The decline in the number of students is much more quickly at specialized high schools than at other types of high schools.
○ Specialized high schools filled 98.5% of their enrollment quota in 2011, but the figure dropped by 9.1%p to 89.4% in 2021. Out of all graduates, the proportion of the unemployed was 28.1% in 2020, which is a record high.
○ the number of teachers at specialized high schools is decreasing. In addition, the proportion of temporary teachers has risen both public and private schools over the last ten years.
