The purpose of this study is to reveal how the Korean youth unemployment is serious and what factors bring about the youth unemployment problem.
I found discouraged workers effect in young people in their twenties. It means that the youth unemployment problem might be more serious than the unemployment rate index shows.
An economic downturn is the main cause of the Korean youth unemployment. Relative size of youth cohort is found to increase the youth unemployment. However, the youth unemployment problem does not seem to be affected by relative wages of youth cohort or the Minimum wages. The inadequate education which has not met the demand of business side does not seem to raise the youth unemployment rate greatly. Also, it is found that there is no relation between the change of industrial or occupational structure and the youth unemployment.
