특수학교나 일반학교 특수학급으로 진학한 자폐성 장애 학생은 지능과 관계없이 지적장애 학생과 함께 「기본 교육과정」을 이수하게 된다. 이와 같은 진로･적성 및 수준에 맞지 않는 학교 교육과정은 장애 학생의 학습동기 저하와 졸업 후 노동시장으로의 이행과 정착에 걸림돌로 작용할 수 있다. 이에 본 연구는 졸업한 학교 및 학급유형별 자폐성 장애 성인의 노동시장 성과 및 만족도 차이를 실증적으로 분석하여 현행 특수교육에 대한 정책적 시사점을 제시하고자 한다. 가중선형 회귀분석 결과, 특수학교보다 일반학교를 졸업한 발달장애인의 노동시장에서 고용될 확률이나 임금수준이 유의하게 높게 나타났다. 일반학교 졸업의 고용 효과는 지적장애인 사이에서, 임금 효과는 자폐성 장애인 사이에서 더 크게 추정되었다. 일반학교 졸업은 지적장애인의 만족도에서는 유의한 영향을 미치지 못했지만 자폐성 장애인의 학교 교육, 일상생활, 근속 의향을 높이는 효과를 가져왔다. 일반학교의 완전통합교육은 자폐성 장애인의 임금 외 노동시장 성과나 만족도와 유의하지 않거나 음(-)의 상관관계를 보였다. 이러한 결과는 서울특별시교육청이 추진하고 있는 일반학교 특수학급 의무화를 통한 장애 학생의 학교 선택권 보장과 개별화 수업을 동반한 통합교육의 필요성에 대한 실증적 근거를 마련한다.

Students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) face a critical decision about whether to attend a mainstream or special school. In South Korea, special schools for students with developmental disabilities typically design curricula tailored specifically for individuals with intellectual disabilities (ID). This study examines how school choice influences the labor market outcomes of students with ASD or ID using weighted linear regression analyses. The findings suggest that graduating from mainstream schools may lead to better labor market outcomes for students with developmental disabilities, with a greater positive impact on employment opportunities for those with ID and on earnings for those with ASD, respectively. However, fully inclusive education in mainstream schools appears to have an insignificant or even negative association with labor market outcomes, excluding earnings but including work and educational satisfaction for these students. These results provide empirical evidence supporting the expansion of school choice for students with ASD or ID and the promotion of a balanced approach to inclusive and special education within mainstream schools, particularly for those with ASD.
