Utilizing heuristic task analysis (HTA), a method developed for eliciting, analyzing, and representing expertise in complex cognitive tasks, the study analyzed the task of college admission officers and identified the process and types of heuristics associated with the task. Two expert college admissions officers were selected for in-depth interviews. The interviews focused on the college admissions evaluation protocol at a 4-year university in a metropolitan city in Korea. The participating experts were asked to articulate their underlying thoughts and principles for evaluating college applicants to elicit procedural steps and sub-steps involved in college admission evaluation process and heuristic knowledge with which the experts performed each step. Based on the interviews, the study identified four steps of the college admissions evaluation process and five types of heuristics (i.e., descriptive models, mental models, rule of thumbs, decision rules, and explanatory models) utilized by the experts during each step. The unique nature of heuristics utilized during the college admission evaluation process as well as important challenges faced by college admission officers were discussed and the study also presented suggestions for future studies.
